Smith of Coalville tiles is a stunning work with subtle coffee field tiles and colourful accents of red, blue and buffs. A large hallway area that is enhanced by design of the floor, tiles are designed around the 1 1/4 inch size format which adds to the overall intricacy of the floor.

The floor had seen a good deal of movement over the years and quite a few tiles needed to be re-fixed before we could commence with the restoration work.

With good scrub with our unique cleaning products stripped away years of dirt and debris and provided an ideal base for our colour enhancing sealers and satin polish.

The floors subtle palette of coffee and oat-like colours are really enhanced by the strong reds and black on gold encaustics and on the whole, still in very good condition.

After deep cleaning and a few minor repairs, we sealed and polished the floor with a nice satin gloss to enhance the colours and leave just a hint of shine.

West Bridgford is pretty famous locally for it's Minton hallways and corridors; but few can compare with this floors colour scheme and overall layout.

Overall a very well maintained floor that just need a little extra oomph behind the scrubbing and a little colour injection, which will also add some protection from wear and make cleaning an absolute breeze.

Over the floors life it has seen some serious movement and shifting, with sections buckled and tented and with large plates shifting apart in a staggered path. This much meant that it was impossible to repair to its original alignment without taking up the majority of the floor.

Then as we starting removing some of the buckled sections we notice that large amounts of the tiles had been fixed down with hot weld glue (not by the present owners). Some of the movement had been caused by a reaction between the concrete and the metal supports, the resultant rust had lifted the concrete. The rest of the movement would probably be down to the lack of adequate foundations for a property of this size.

Once we had stripped of the aged polish, we set about cleaning the tiles and injecting a little more colour and protecting the floor with a subtle sheen.

The floor will now have far more protection and maintenance couldn't be simpler.

In the flesh however that was a different story and later in the day when the sun had moved around to the front of the house, this hallway looked stunning with that little hint of sheen.

There are a few badly stained tiles that are to be replaced at a later date with colour matched hand-made tiles.

The owners had originally found the floor under carpet and over the years worked hard to remove the old adhesive and underlay rubber. Their efforts to maintain this beautiful floor have certainly paid off as there was very little dirt on the floor; compared to the average Minton floor of this age.

Just take a look at the detail in those encaustic tiles; truly a work of art and surrounded by the red they really are eye catching. The floor is similar to their neighbours which we cleaned their floor last year.

As the floor had been kept in such a good state, we aimed to improve the colour and increase the tiles durability by adding a hard coating of satin sheen which would protect the floor and reduce cleaning and maintenance time.

Naturally like all of our customers, the owner had real taste and knew the floor would look far more impressive than any carpet and more hygienic to boot.

The carpet had kept the floor in very good condition overall, nice and flat with relatively few areas of damage. But it was plagued with loads of 4" carpet grippers, each one stuck down with contact adhesive.

As you can see with a real deep clean and a nice satin sheen, the floor looks beautiful. Not only does it look really nice, but it will also be far easier to maintain and keep clean.

Much of the efflorescence had been left untreated and as a result had become calcified into the tile body, pretty much rendering it part of the tile. The floor had also been covered with gypsum deposits from a somewhat messy plasterer.

Overall the finished floor looks nice, especially considering the age of the floor and the wear it has seen.

The floor had seen some serious traffic over the years and the original tiles from the Campbell Tile & Brick company had worn quite badly. As you can see from the photos pretty much every tiles has been cracked.

One of the reasons for this cracking was the poor foundation construction. When we removed the tiles the substrate and base pretty much fell apart, built up from bricks, sand, crockery, soil pipes. Not really conducive to a strong stable base.

After removing the loose debris, we refilled the void with quality flexible materials right the way through to the grout. The result is a far stronger and resilient base that will hopefully last years.

The photo of the finished floor was taken in artificial light hence the speckling of the image.
